Feed Me : My New Found Subscription Obsession

Tuesday, September 12th 2006

The only thing I do more obsessively than hit “refresh” in Mint, is hit refresh in my RSS news reader in Yahoo. If you haven’t yet enjoyed the wonders of having new content from your favorite sites delivered fresh to one place, causing you a wonderful, massive distraction - then you haven’t yet lived (or breathed or tasted my Momma’s mac and cheese or ... you get the picture....)

I thought I would share with you some of what I subscribe to and why ... passing on to you some graphic goodness AND some worthy writing. I also want to draw your attention to my feed subscription(s) way down below. The sketchbook is fun semi-regular drawing-photoshop-photos and other stuff for your viewing enjoyment, while the main feed would send you articles like the one you are reading. Anyways, enough pointing at my stuff, let’s look at some really great feeds:

Designers & Resources
Jason Santa Maria is a well known designer from Philadelphia. There’s a nice mix of content, from the technical to the personal. He has a main feed, an “oddities and diversions” feed, and a stellar “photo of the day” feed. Jason was a part of the redesign of…

A List Apart is an iconic, well put-together must-read for web designers. Get the feed, know when it’s updated. Read on.

Ideas On Ideas brings us thoughtful well written posts about the business of design, design philosphy, etc. Great stuff.

Stylegala is a nice way to keep up on what’s going on in web design world. They publish links in their feed.

Veerle’s Blog is a continual source of inspiration and helpful info. One of the articles that I found there, convinced me to take on Expression Engine (the CMS that powers this site). It’s a beautiful site, so I very rarely read the feed. I use the feed to know when she’s updated.

Illustration
I only subscribe to one feed that has to do with Illustration (currently):
Drawn! helps me find new Illustrators, which leads to inspiration, which leads to more creative work from yours truly. (Updated a lot and entertaining)

Other Random Stuff
Relevant Magazine supplies me with relevant info on God, life and progressive culture (imagine that)!? Wonderful and updated all the time.

Photojojo is one fine photo newsletter. In their own words: “ We believe in doing one thing, and doing it very, very well ... We find the best photo shiz anywhere”. Great… (and they use the word “shiz")…

and last, but not least…
SU Basketball and Football ... C’mon, You know I need my daily fix of the Orange. Yes, even football. I’m an optimist. (That means where you see 0-2, I see a half-full glass of orange juice, extra pulp.)

That’s it for now… I need to check my feeds for updates.

(For a more succinct description of “feeds” and “RSS”, Wikipedia offers some good info.)

Found your page via IF and your farm... which was delightful. thanks for the additional links here. I'll be back... eventually. If I subscribed to everything, my server would crash. so I have to remember to go look. (Probably saves time, too.)

In responce to your "Cuse" ref. Some of us (namely WVU fans) need not worry over such analogies. Go Big East!

I've yet to use an rss reader (yes, I'm living in the dark ages). I do, however, use a program to notify me when webpages are updated, and I have about 100 websites on list...
